What's the Secret Behind Ayurvedic Hair Oiling?

What's the Secret Behind Ayurvedic Hair Oiling?

Hair Care That Cares for Your Body: The Ayurvedic Ritual Behind SEVA

Today's beauty routines are often rushed. We shampoo, condition and move on to the next task without a second thought. But for thousands of years, hair oiling in India was never simply about healthier hair—it was a ritual. A moment to pause. To reconnect. To care for both the body and the mind. At SEVA, we wanted to bring that tradition into the modern world. Not by recreating an ancient formula, but by refining it into a luxurious weekly ritual that nourishes your hair while inviting you to slow down. Because we believe hair care should care for your body too.

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is one of the world's oldest systems of wellbeing, originating in India over 5,000 years ago. Rather than treating beauty separately from health, Ayurveda views them as deeply connected. Your hair, skin, energy and overall wellbeing are all reflections of balance within the body. Central to Ayurveda is the belief that every person has a unique combination of three natural energies, known as doshas. When these energies become imbalanced, it may be reflected in the condition of the scalp and hair.

Understanding the Three Doshas

Vata (Air + Ether) When Vata is dominant or out of balance, hair often feels:

  • Dry
  • Frizzy
  • Brittle
  • Prone to breakage

Vata benefits from deeply nourishing botanical oils that restore softness and hydration.   SEVA botanicals that support Vata:

  • Argan Oil
  • Sweet Almond Oil
  • Castor Oil
  • Brahmi
  • Fractionated Coconut Oil

Pitta (Fire + Water) Pitta is associated with heat. An imbalanced Pitta scalp may feel:

  • Sensitive
  • Warm
  • Itchy
  • Inflamed

Traditional cooling botanicals help soothe and comfort the scalp.   SEVA botanicals that support Pitta:

  • Amla
  • Bhringraj
  • Brahmi
  • Lavender
  • Frankincens

Kapha (Earth + Water) Kapha hair is often naturally thick but can become:

  • Oily
  • Heavy
  • Dull
  • Prone to product build-up

Ayurveda traditionally pairs Kapha with stimulating botanicals that refresh the scalp.   SEVA botanicals that support Kapha:

  • Rosemary
  • Bergamot
  • Bhringraj
  • Amla
  • Castor Oil

Why We Created a Tridoshic Formula

Rather than formulating for just one dosha, we intentionally created a Tridoshic blend. That means every bottle combines botanicals traditionally valued for supporting Vata, Pitta and Kapha, making it suitable for all hair types and adaptable to the changing needs of your scalp throughout the seasons and different stages of life. Instead of asking, "Which dosha am I?", SEVA meets you where you are.

More Than Hair Strength—A Ritual for Mind and Body

One thing that drew us most deeply to Ayurveda wasn't just the ingredients. It was the ritual. Traditional hair oiling was never rushed. The gentle massage, intentional touch and aromatic botanicals were all part of creating a moment of stillness. That's why we intentionally selected essential oils such as Lavender, Frankincense and Bergamot, alongside botanicals like Brahmi, which have long been valued in Ayurvedic traditions for their calming qualities. Together, they create the grounding, spa-like aroma that has become part of the SEVA experience.

That's the ritual behind SEVA. A moment to pause, reconnect and care for both your hair and yourself. Every drop is an invitation to slow down.
