The Ritual of Hair Oiling

The Ritual of Hair Oiling

An ancient practice, reimagined for modern self-care.

Long before haircare became another step in a rushed beauty routine, hair oiling was a ritual.

A moment of pause.
A gesture of care.
A practice passed through hands, homes and generations.

Rooted in ancestral Indian beauty traditions and inspired by Ayurvedic self-care, hair oiling has long been used as a way to nourish the scalp, care for the roots and create connection through touch. It is not simply about applying oil to the hair. It is about slowing down enough to listen to the body, return to the roots and transform care into something more intentional.

At SEVA, we honour this ritual through a modern lens — creating scalp-first beauty rituals designed to support healthier-looking hair while offering a grounding moment of restoration.

What is hair oiling?

Hair oiling is the practice of applying oil to the scalp and hair as part of a nourishing care ritual.

Traditionally, oil is massaged into the scalp using slow, intentional movements, allowing the product to meet the roots while encouraging a moment of calm and connection. The oil is then left to absorb before washing, helping to soften the hair, replenish the scalp and support the overall feeling of nourishment.

But within Indian beauty culture, hair oiling has always been more than a product application.

It is the memory of oil warmed between the palms.
The rhythm of hands moving through the scalp. The quiet care of a mother, grandmother or loved one.
The feeling of being tended to. It is beauty as devotion.

Why the scalp matters

Healthy-looking hair begins at the roots.

While many haircare routines focus only on the lengths and ends, the scalp is the foundation of the hair journey. When the scalp feels dry, stressed, imbalanced or neglected, the hair can feel dull, fragile or disconnected from its natural vitality.

A scalp-first ritual brings attention back to where hair begins.

By massaging oil into the roots, you create a moment of nourishment and stimulation, helping to support the scalp while encouraging a more consistent and intentional approach to haircare.

At SEVA, we believe the scalp deserves the same care and reverence as the skin. Not rushed. Not overlooked. But treated as the foundation of restoration.

The ritual as nervous system care

Hair oiling is not only about how your hair looks. It is also about how the ritual makes you feel.

In an overstimulated world, self-care often becomes another task to complete. Another product to apply. Another step to move through quickly before the day begins or ends.
Hair oiling invites a different pace.

The pressure of the fingertips.
The repetition of massage.
The scent and texture of the oil.
The quiet act of choosing to care for yourself.

Together, these elements can help create a grounding moment within your routine. A pause that encourages the body to soften, the mind to settle and beauty to become something deeper than surface.

This is the heart of SEVA: beauty that restores from scalp to soul.

How to create your hair oiling ritual

Your ritual does not need to be complicated. It simply needs to be consistent, intentional and yours.

1. Begin with dry hair
Before applying your oil, gently brush through your hair to remove tangles and prepare the scalp for your ritual.

Apply your hair oil directly to the scalp before washing. Part the hair in sections and place a small amount of oil along the roots and through lengths of your hair, focusing on areas that feel dry, tense or in need of extra care.

2. Massage with intention
Using your fingertips, massage the oil into the scalp in slow, circular movements. Allow the pressure to feel grounding rather than rushed. This is where the ritual begins — through touch, rhythm and presence.

3. Comb through your roots
For a deeper scalp ritual, pair your oil with the Golden Kansa Comb. Starting at the front hairline, gently glide the comb from front to back to help distribute the oil and stimulate the scalp.

Use small circular motions around the temples, crown and areas of tension. These areas are known as marma points — key points traditionally massaged to help release tension, encourage relaxation and support overall wellbeing.

Like a gua sha for the scalp, the Golden Kansa Comb helps distribute oil more evenly, support healthy circulation and elevate your ritual experience.

4. Let the oil absorb
Allow the oil to sit before washing. This gives the ritual time to feel complete — a quiet pause between application and cleansing.

5. Wash and restore
Cleanse as usual and return to your routine with hair that feels nourished, cared for and renewed.
